Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 1 (PTGS1), also known as cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), is a constitutively expressed enzyme critical for prostanoid biosynthesis. It catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), a precursor for various prostaglandins and thromboxanes involved in inflammation, pain response, fever, and homeostasis. Unlike its inducible isoform PTGS2/COX-2. PTGS1 is ubiquitously expressed in most tissues under basal conditions, playing essential roles in gastrointestinal mucosal protection, platelet aggregation, and renal function.

Recombinant human PTGS1 protein is produced via genetic engineering in heterologous expression systems (e.g., insect or mammalian cells) to study its structure, enzymatic activity, and regulatory mechanisms.
