The SMC2 (Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes 2) antibody is a research tool targeting the SMC2 protein, a core component of the condensin complex. SMC2 pairs with SMC4 to form the condensin I/II heterodimer, which facilitates chromosome condensation during mitosis and meiosis by introducing positive supercoils into DNA, ensuring proper sister chromatid resolution and genomic stability.

First identified in studies exploring mitotic chromosome architecture, SMC2’s role extends beyond cell division, influencing transcription regulation and 3D genome organization. Antibodies against SMC2 enable detection of its expression, localization, and interactions via techniques like Western blot, immunofluorescence, and ChIP-seq. These studies have linked SMC2 dysfunction to chromosomal instability, aneuploidy, and diseases, including cancer and developmental disorders.
