背景信息

ABCB5 antibody targets the ATP-binding cassette sub-family B member 5 (ABCB5), a transmembrane protein belonging to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. Initially identified as a marker for stem cell populations, ABCB5 is expressed in various normal tissues, including skin, ocular epithelium, gastrointestinal tract, and hematopoietic stem cells. Its primary role involves regulating cellular transport processes, such as metabolite efflux and drug resistance, akin to other ABC transporters like ABCB1 (P-glycoprotein).

In pathological contexts, ABCB5 is overexpressed in cancer stem cells (CSCs) of melanoma, colorectal carcinoma, and other malignancies, contributing to tumor progression, chemoresistance, and relapse. This makes ABCB5 a potential therapeutic target; monoclonal antibodies against ABCB5 have been developed to inhibit CSC-driven tumorigenesis or enhance chemotherapy sensitivity.
