The solute carrier family 8 member A3 (SLC8A3), also known as the sodium-calcium exchanger 3 (NCKX3), is a membrane transport protein critical for maintaining calcium homeostasis in cells. Belonging to the SLC8 family, it facilitates the bidirectional exchange of sodium (Na⁺) and calcium (Ca²⁺) ions across cellular membranes, relying on the electrochemical gradient of Na⁺ to extrude Ca²⁺ from cells. This protein is predominantly expressed in brain tissues, retina, and secretory glands, playing essential roles in neuronal signaling, retinal function, and electrolyte secretion. Structurally, SLC8A3 contains 11 transmembrane domains and a large extracellular loop, characteristic of the NCKX subfamily.
