STARD3 (StAR-related lipid transfer domain-containing protein 3), also known as MLN64. is a human protein encoded by the *STARD3* gene located on chromosome 17q12-21. It belongs to the STARD protein family, characterized by a conserved START (StAR-related lipid-transfer) domain that facilitates lipid binding and transport. STARD3 specifically localizes to late endosomes and lysosomes through its N-terminal transmembrane domain, while its C-terminal START domain mediates cholesterol transfer via interaction with NPC1 and NPC2 proteins, playing a role in intracellular cholesterol homeostasis.

Structurally, STARD3 contains an N-terminal MENTAL (MLN64 N-terminal) domain with four transmembrane helices anchoring it to membranes, and a C-terminal START domain that binds cholesterol.
