Caspase-12 (CASP12) is a member of the cysteine-aspartic protease (caspase) family, primarily implicated in apoptotic pathways and inflammatory responses. Unlike other caspases, human CASP12 exists in an inactive truncated form in most populations due to a genetic polymorphism (rs497116) that introduces a premature stop codon.
