The mitochondrial ribosomal protein S36 (MRPS36), also known as MRP-S36 or MRPS28. is a component of the small 28S subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome). Mitochondrial ribosomes are specialized for translating mitochondrial DNA-encoded mRNAs, which are essential for oxidative phosphorylation and cellular energy production. MRPS36 is a nuclear-encoded protein imported into mitochondria, where it participates in the assembly and stability of the mitoribosome. Its precise structural or functional role remains less characterized compared to other mitoribosomal proteins, but it is hypothesized to contribute to ribosomal subunit interface formation or coordination during translation initiation/elongation.
Antibodies targeting MRPS36 are valuable tools for studying mitochondrial translation machinery, protein synthesis defects, and mitochondrial dysfunction linked to diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndromes, or cancer. These antibodies enable detection of MRPS36 expression levels via Western blotting, immunofluorescence, or immunoprecipitation, aiding in investigations of mitoribosome biogenesis or mitochondrial gene expression regulation. Commercial MRPS36 antibodies are typically raised in rabbits or mice using synthetic peptides or recombinant protein immunogens. Validation includes testing specificity in knockout cell lines or tissues. Recent studies have also explored MRPS36's potential as a biomarker or therapeutic target in pathologies associated with mitochondrial insufficiency.
